A local initiative to expose younger children to the numerous career options in the construction industry received national attention recently when it was recognized by the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) national organization during their annual convention.

Manchester’s Parkside Middle School Construction Careers program won one of the Chapter Awards of Excellence & Merit for its new and innovative approach to construction workforce development.

The Parkside School Construction Careers program was praised for the way it works to match experienced craftspeople with educators to give students exposure to a career in construction. The use of age-appropriate hands-on learning and lectures from real construction workers was deemed to be very unique. For the student, after completion of the course and experiences, they will demonstrate an understanding of needed core academic skills, practical work skills, and the importance of teamwork, communication and cooperation. In addition, they will gain an understanding of the various jobs and career paths available within each of the subfields.

The program was supported in part by the Construction Sector Advisory Board for New Hampshire’s Sector Partnership Initiative (SPI). SPI is an industry-driven state-wide effort to help New Hampshire businesses in targeted industries address workforce needs. Focusing on five core industries – construction, health care, hospitality, manufacturing and technology – SPI assists companies in finding funding and training resources that provide employees with improved skills and career advancement opportunities. One of the advisory board members, Manchester City School Board Member Jimmy Lehoux, spearheaded the effort and several of the sector stakeholder companies provided input, materials and other forms of support to initiate the program. It serves as a great example of how industry supported a public education initiative to bring visibility to the career options of the construction industry.

The Excellence & Merits awards program showcases those programs that have achieved excellence in areas that align with ABC’s strategic goals. The Parkside Construction Careers Program received the Excellence Award in Workforce Development efforts, which was chosen over dozens of entries received from across the nation. The goal of the program is to recognize outstanding programs and activities which represent the best the industry has to offer.

The award was presented at the 2019 Associated Builders & Contractors convention held in Long Beach CA on March 28, 2019.
